A tool born from watching a child light up over a single well-timed word — and wanting to give more children that same feeling, one symbol at a time.
XpressUP grows out of the same family as XpressAble, an AI communication app we built to help a child close to us find words in everyday conversation, and XpressLingo, a real-time travel translator born from that same idea. Along the way, we kept coming back to an earlier question: how do children build the vocabulary they need in the first place?
Symbol-based communication has helped children for decades — a picture of a cup means "drink" long before a child can read or say the word. We wanted to take that same idea and turn it into something a young child could explore on their own: tap a picture, hear the word spoken clearly, and practice saying it back, in whichever language their family speaks at home.
We built XpressUP around a library of 412 symbol concepts across 24 categories — food, feelings, family, and more — each one a text-free, language-agnostic picture that works the same way whether your child is learning English, Hindi, Tamil, or any of the other languages we support. Every word is spoken aloud, and every child gets to choose an avatar that feels like their own.
It's still early — we're building this one category, one language, and one quiz at a time, testing it with real families as we go. Every symbol we add and every language we translate brings XpressUP a little closer to being useful for children everywhere.
A symbol a child recognizes instantly is often the fastest path to a word they can use with confidence.
Vocabulary shouldn't stop at English. The same picture works across 9 languages, so families can learn together.
Knowledge Check quizzes turn practice into a game, with fuzzy scoring that rewards a good try, not just a perfect one.
No accounts, no photos, no identifying information — just an avatar your child picks and the words they're learning.
XpressUP is designed, built, and maintained independently — from the symbol library to the translation pipeline to this website you're reading right now. It grew out of a genuine need, not a business plan, and that's still what shapes every feature we add.
XpressUP shares its foundation with XpressAble, an AI communication app for children with speech challenges, and XpressLingo, a real-time travel translator.
We're still building, and every family who reaches out helps shape where XpressUP goes next.
